Student Research
The Bard chemistry program has a long history of students going on to graduate studies. In the last sixteen years, 64 students have graduated with a concentration in chemistry, 50% of whom were women and 70% of these chemistry graduates have continued their studies in graduate school or medical school. Students are required to complete a senior research project in the senior year. Throughout the school year and summer, other opportunities exist to work on research projects under the supervision of a faculty member.
Nusrah Hussain ‘09
Nusrah always had a keen interest in organic synthesis and completed her senior project in developing new synthetic methodology with Prof. Emily McLaughlin. Subsequently, she worked in the lab at Bard with Prof. Anderson and also at the University of Pennsylvania in the laboratories or Patrick Walsh. She is commencing her graduate studies at Penn this fall.
Ava Kreider-Mueller ‘09
Ava, originally a musician, came to the sciences in her sophomore year at Bard. She worked in Prof. Anderson’s lab one summer and for her senior project working on the orthometallation of platinum complexes. Ava will start her graduate studies in chemistry at Columbia University this fall.
Nicholas Sharac ‘09
Nick started his chemistry studies in his sophomore year and then went full steam ahead. He completed an REU at Rochester University and work on the synthesis of C^C^N ligands with Prof. Anderson for his senior project. Nick will be headed to graduate school in chemistry at UC Irvine this fall.
Eber Wright ‘09
Eber started from day one as a chemistry major and worked on his senior project with Prof. Anderson. He synthesized and studied multi-hetero-nuclear metal complexes. Eber plans to go to graduate school at The University of Windsor this fall.
James Morris ‘07
James had a keen interest in chemistry and explored throughout his tenure at Bard. He completed an REU at The University of Cincinnati one summer and worked in the lab with Prof. Anderson another. He completed his senior research project on the synthesis and reactivity of orthometallated platinum complexes. James is currently a PhD student at The University of Rochester working in Bill Jones’ laboratories.
Skylar Ferrara ‘07
Skylar came to Bard interested in chemistry from day one. He started working on various projects in his freshman year. He worked on research in the summer both at Bard with Prof. Anderson and at The University of Idaho. He finished his senior research project on synthesis and reactivity of paramagnetic ruthenium species. He is in graduate school at Tulane University.
Peter Milano ‘06
Peter came to Bard as a film major but realized his love for chemistry and its associated lab work. He attended an REU one summer at the University of Arkansas. His senior research work was on the synthesis of organometallic complexes with Prof. Anderson. He is currently in medical school at The University of Florida.
Amnon Herman ‘06
Amnon was always interested in biochemistry and worked on the synthesis and reactivity of multi-hetero-nuclear complexes and their interaction with DNA. Amnon is currently studying in Israel.
Mahmud Hussain ‘05
Mahmud Hussain arrived at Bard with an interest in science and medicine. In the middle of his second year he became increasingly interested in chemistry. He spent the following summer doing research at Bard with financial support from the American Chemical Society. The summer after his junior year was spent as an REU student at Syracuse University. In his senior project, Mahmud synthesized novel organic ligands which when reacted with platinum produced orthometallated complexes. Mahmud is currently a Ph. D. candidate in chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania working in the laboratories of Patrick Walsh.
Emily Grumbling ‘04
Emily majored in both film and chemistry at Bard. In her chemistry senior project she studied the thermal and photochemical decomposition of aryl diazonium ions; she found surprising thermal stability in many of these ions. Emily is currently a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry at the University of Arizona studying experimental quantum chemistry.
